Introducing Shakespeare
source: wikipedia
Who was William Shakespeare? What are his main works?
Why has he been universally acknowledged as "a writer of all times" ?
Laura Hopwood believes that Shakespeare’s text, being rhythmical and poetic, lends itself well to physicality and movement. Laura also says that studying Shakespeare in the UK is amazing, due to the fact you can watch plays be performed on the stage where Shakespeare’s plays were originally performed.

Shakespeare on the Book Day at the I.E.S. Torre de los Espejos
Last Tuesday 21 April, we celebrated the Book Day at the high school. This year we have focused on Shakespeare as the major figure in the development of English language and literature.
In the school's library we displayed a little corner devoted to Shakespeare's works and books.
3rd years have paid homage to Shakespeare by performing a scene from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in front of their classmates.
The scene chosen is the final act of the play which enacts the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, whose tragic story forms part of Ovid's Metamorphoses , the story of two young lovers who are forbidden to love each other due to their parents' rivalry.
We all had a great time rehearsing, practising, arranging the stage and watching the play, and above improving our English through public speaking and listening.

Micro-fiction contest
source: http://en.wikipedia.org/
As Shakespeare defined "brevity as the soul of wit", we would like to foster wit and creativity
through a micro-fiction contest.
My liege, and madam, to expostulate
What majesty should be, what duty is,
What day is day, night night, and time is time,
Were nothing but to waste night, day, and time;
Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit,
And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,
I will be brief. Your noble son is mad. . . .
What majesty should be, what duty is,
What day is day, night night, and time is time,
Were nothing but to waste night, day, and time;
Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit,
And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,
I will be brief. Your noble son is mad. . . .
Hamlet Act 2, scene 2, 86-92
What is micro-fiction and how should I write it ?:
- It is a different medium of expression from short stories o tales, it is a briefer story ,normally told in no more than 300 words .
- Tips for writing micro-fiction: as a narrative text, it contains the main features of stories but they should be SMALL: few characters in one or two settings, happening in a short period of time. The key to microfiction is economy of language and brevity, avoid personal judgements, explanations or abstract descriptions. Stories are brief but intense, include only what is essential. Microfiction is SMALL but with BIG meaning. Do not summarise a story, this is bad micro-fiction.
- Read here examples of micro-fiction from the Microfiction Monday magazine

We are already in April, the month of the World Book Day, a worldwide celebration of books and
reading. The date chosen, 23rd of April , corresponds to the anniversary of the death of William
Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, two the greatest literary men of two of the most spoken
languages in the world, English and Spanish. This is also St. George's Day, Aragon's patron saint
and in Catalonia it is also the Day of the Rose, on which people have the pretty custom of giving
away a book and a rose.

This year we are going to celebrate this month by taking a closer look at William Shakespeare, the
greatest English poet and playwright and author of universal characters like Hamlet, love stories such
as Romeo and Juliet and creator of many of the words and expressions used in everyday English
today.
Shakespeare trascended his time and home country because of the universality of his
themes appealing to human feelings and emotions. As Ben Jonson, Shakespeare's contemporary
playwright, once defined him, "He was not of an age, but for all times".

World literature in English
This year we decided to celebrate the World Book Day focusing on the world literature in English, that is, literary works written by English-speaking writers whose literary quality and popularity have transcended their times and moved beyond their countries' frontiers and now form part of the world literature.
We all have grown up watching movies and reading stories about Alice in Wonderland or characters such as Peter Pan , Oliver Twist or Hamlet. For that reason we asked the pupils to search for information about favourite authors and literary works so that they will enlarge and enrich their general cultural knowledge of world's literature
Some students decided to make posters devoted to a particular author and others chose a digital format. With their splendid work we have nicely dressed the high shool's walls and blog.
